Is .exe Safe to Open? File Safety Guide 2026
.exe files can contain malware. Here's how to check if an executable file is safe before opening it.
Before Opening Any .exe
- Check the source — Did you download it from the official website? Check the publisher at nerq.ai.
- Scan with antivirus — Right-click → "Scan with Windows Defender" or your antivirus
- Check VirusTotal — Upload the file to virustotal.com for a multi-engine scan
- Verify the digital signature — Right-click → Properties → Digital Signatures. Is it signed by a known publisher?
- Check the file size — Suspiciously small executables (< 100KB) may be downloaders for malware
High-Risk Sources
- Email attachments (even from known contacts)
- Torrent downloads
- "Cracked" or "free" versions of paid software
- Pop-up download prompts on websites
